Program Description: Radiation emergencies will pose a specific set of challenges to EMS, nurses, and physicians. These include the need for PPE, triage, radiation survey, decontamination, and medical assessment of severity of radiation exposures. These will be followed by appropriate management and disposition. The proposed 1-day training course will consist of content that addresses all of these areas and the instructors will demonstrate at the end of the day the reception of a victim who is contaminated with radioactive material.

Target Audience: The Radiological Preparedness and Emergency Response training is intended for pre-hospital care providers and first responders and first receivers as well as public health responders who may be called on to respond to a mass casualty incident and/or treat victims of a radiological exposure.

Objectives:

Upon completion of the Radiological Preparedness & Emergency Response course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe different possible scenarios of radiological incidents using historical examples.
  2. Discuss basic principles of radiation physics causing clinical injuries.
  3. Describe different radiation detection equipment and the performance of a proper radiation detection survey
  4. Discuss radiological scene safety, decontamination measures and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  5. Discuss the difference between radiation exposure and contamination.
  6. Describe the clinical manifestations and management of acute and subacute radiation injuries.
